Élégie Boréale
A love letter to winter in Montreal.
The Canadian Series
My Canadian Series is a tribute to the people and spirit of this land—its cities, its winters, its untold stories.
And there is no city quite like Montreal in the 1960s—the most European, the most Bohemian place in North America, where poetry, passion, and revolution drifted through the winter air like cigarette smoke in a dimly lit café.
And the women of Montreal—God bless them—
They are muses, rebels, lovers, and ghosts.
Sharp of mind, fierce of heart, effortless in their beauty and grace.
They are the kind of women you never quite forget....
even long after you’ve left town.
A Story in Scent
I arrived in Montreal by train,
Winter night, minus thirty.
The city blurred in frost and neon,
Streetlights reflecting in black ice.
She was there—
Red-lipped, wrapped in patchouli and fur,
A flicker of warmth against the night,
An ember in the dark.
Her apartment was small, walls thin as paper,
Bohemian disorder—
Candle wax dripping, books stacked like monuments,
A mattress on the floor,
The air thick with musk and amber,
Orange blossoms wilting in a glass by the window.
We made love to keep the cold at bay,
Civet on her skin, the salt of sweat,
The fire of patchouli curling in the heat between us.
Her perfume clung to my scarf, my hands, my ribs—
Powder turned to fire, softness laced with something untamed.
When the snow hushes the city,
When the wind moves through empty streets,
I still catch a trace of her—
A breath of jasmine on the cold,
A memory dissolving like smoke,
A song I once knew but can no longer sing.

THIS WOODEN BOX REPRESENTS AN APPLE BIN
I managed my families "Meleg's Orchard," in a small south Ontario town until I was 25. The orchard started with Sam Meleg, a Slovak from the Provence of Vojvodina, former Kingdom of Serbia of the Austro Hungarian Empire. My work ethic, self deprecating humour and stubborn nature is reflective of my Slovak, peasant roots.
Here my cousins are laying crops into the "apple bin." My wooden perfume box is meant to represent apple bins. Be they rose, vetiver or jasmine farmers. Be they from India, Mexico, Canada or Iran - Meleg Perfumes celebrates farmers and artisans of all nations.
